A Faithful Shepherd and Proud USJ Alumnus
With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Chorbishop Joseph Lahoud, who left us on July 16, 2025, in Boston, Massachusetts. A devoted priest, a wise guide, and a deeply respected community figure, he served the Maronite Church with unwavering love for over sixty years.
Born in Qartaba, Lebanon, on March 27, 1934, he pursued theological studies at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ). His time at USJ helped shape a priesthood rooted in compassion, humility, and quiet strength.
Ordained in 1959, Fr. Lahoud began his ministry in Connecticut before becoming Pastor of Our Lady of the Cedars in Boston in 1970, a mission he carried out with grace and dedication for four decades. He was elevated to Monsignor in 1982 and Chorbishop in 1986, honors that reflected his lifelong dedication to the Church and the deep trust he inspired.
Even after retiring in 2010, he remained close to the community, especially to Lebanese families and newcomers. A proud USJ alumnus to the very end, he opened his heart and home to students and young professionals arriving in Boston, offering them guidance, comfort, and a strong connection to their roots.
In 2012, he received the National Order of the Cedar, Lebanon’s highest state honor, in recognition of his exemplary service and moral leadership.
His funeral was held at Our Lady of the Cedars in Jamaica Plain, where clergy and parishioners gathered to honor and celebrate a remarkable life filled with faith, generosity and kindness.
May his memory be eternal.
